Sacco wants the reader to understand that the events were very that occur are very real and he can’t always emotionally separate himself. As he is journalist, he tries to unsuccessfully separate himself by displaying a lack of compassion to his subjects.

Sacco exploits the tragic events that happen to Palestinians involved in the conflict for the purpose of personal gain in his photojournalism career and shows a lack of sympathy for doing so.

Sacco does not shy away from revealing his own ambiguities as a visiting western journalist. He depicts his own initial disbelief of reported detentions and torture. Therefore, he is able to make no pretense of the realities of life in Palestine and its people.

Sacco, as a good journalist should, tries to separates his feelings from his work, enabling him to more accurately account his experiences. This book is not meant to be an account of his personal feelings on the matter, so when it appears heartless and unfeeling, this is Sacco trying to do his job appropriately.

Sacco expresses his urge to mediate and try to get both sides to understand that they are not pure evil, however, his wish to see the baby head seemed like he did not care about the conflict at all, only a nice story.

Sacco sympathizes with the hardships that Palestinians face in their daily life due to the conflict, but as a journalist, he tries to refrain himself from any emotions and just does his job - captures the pain and suffering people and stay away from trouble.

Stacco’s frequent lack of feeling for human suffering and violence comes off inhumane, yet this reveals Stacco’s good journalistic qualities because he is being unbiased to events.

Sacco does not feel any remorse for the suffering of the Palestinians, in fact he hopes to catch and document instances of brutality so that he can profit from his photos.

Sacco's desire for the truth, whether it is through interviews or photographs (such as at the end with the baby), comes off as being rude and inconsiderate to the victims. However, a good journalist is willing to go to these depths for the truth, no matter how degrading it may seem.

Sacco remains seemingly indifferent to the horrors suffered around him because he doesn't want to give the impression that he can do anything to help them.
